Why the hour matters

Switch the crowds off.

Same museum, other hour. By day it belongs to everyone; at the late opening the galleries breathe again.

The crowds

  • Phones held up at the Mona Lisa
  • A flag to follow, a headset in your ear
  • Saw it, felt nothing

Uncrowds

  • The late opening, after the day-trip coaches
  • Your own guide, your questions
  • The part of the evening you remember

Our guide counted at least 50 people in the main courtyard at 11:17 on a Friday in February, most of them queuing.
